On February 9, 2023 the Bullitt County Public Schools Safe Schools Department partnered with Pleasant Grove Elementary School to host one of several “A Spot of Family Fun” nights presented throughout our district’s elementary schools. Students and families came to school to enjoy snacks and to spend time enjoying music and activities together. BCPS district school-based therapists, who are licensed clinical social workers, were on hand to interact with students, assist parents, and answer questions. They also provided brochures on various mental health services available in our community.
The “The Little Spot of Feelings and Emotions” series was used as a guide to provide several stations where students and families worked together to complete craft activities and increase their own emotional awareness: learning to identify emotions and how to handle those emotions appropriately. Families, students, teachers, counselors, and administrators were all engaged and worked together throughout the evening – talking about their feelings and coping with sometimes difficult emotions. One PGES parent said, “This was a very good opportunity for me to learn how to work with my child at home. Thank you for doing this with our school!”
The Bullitt County Schools’ Safe Schools department is committed to providing support to schools, families, and students in developing healthy emotional and social skills and to creating a safe environment in our schools. These SEL nights are popping up all over the Bullitt County district in many elementary schools – our next event is this week (Thursday, 3/23 from 5 to 7 PM) at Maryville Elementary! Thank you to all the parents, families, teachers, and BCPS staff members who work hard to make each of these events a success!
