BCPS believes in promoting the quality of education we provide our students, and part of that quality comes from up-to-date environments that support each of our students’ learning interests. As we have embarked on updating facilities around the district, BCPS is now excited to focus on improving our athletic facilities at our three high schools. These improvements will not only support student athletic success, but give them a chance to show off their hard work and dedication to our community.
Allowing all students access to state-of-the-art athletic facilities directly contributes to their growth and development. Athletic participation gives students an advantage as they focus on becoming Mastery Learners, one of our Graduate Profile pillars. Being part of a team and competing require a growth mindset to persevere when engaging with novel ideas, situations, and challenges within their activity.
“These improvements will allow every student in the county to have the opportunity to use the new facilities,” states Tony Roth, Director of Facilities. “Football, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, band, baseball, softball, PE classes – these are all groups that will utilize the new fields.”
Facility renovations will be made in two phases. In the first phase, each high school will receive new and up-to-date:
Bleachers
Pressbox
Video scoreboard
Field turf
8-lane track
LED lighting
Sound system
The second phase will be the construction of all-new fieldhouses, which will include locker rooms, athletic training facilities, weightroom, indoor practice area with batting cages, restrooms, and concessions. Additional restrooms and concessions will be built at North Bullitt High School, and bleachers, pressboxes, and lighting will be renovated at the other outdoor venues. As a part of this project, Bullitt East’s track will be moved to the practice field and current tennis courts, a new bus exit will be constructed to eliminate congestion on Highway 44, and new tennis courts will be added.
“Widening the tracks to 8 lanes will allow all three high schools to host invitational meets and regional competitions,” says Mr. Roth. “Band competitions can be held there. These major events can raise money for the schools; they will also help our local economy as more people come into our area to eat and shop as they attend the events.”
Work has already begun on these facilities, and all three schools are scheduled to be ready to host events on August 31, 2023.
“It is an ambitious schedule,” Mr. Roth adds, “but one that all parties – the Board of Education, administration, design team, and construction crew are committed to fulfilling for our kids.”
