Hebron Middle School educator and speech/debate coach Woody Zorn has been named the 2023-2024 Kentucky Outstanding Speech and Debate Educator by the National Federation of High Schools. Zorn was nominated by the Kentucky High School Speech League (Kentucky’s state organization for speech and debate) for meeting these criteria: organization and continuance of an activity program, significant and ongoing contributions to the field, years of both curricular and co-curricular service, contributions to the profession both in and out of the state.
Zorn is the current Chair of the Board of Directors of the Kentucky High School Speech League, and has been voted the KHSSL State Coach of the Year award three times -- twice for Junior Speech and once for Debate. Zorn was an award-winning competitive speaker for Trinity High School and Western Kentucky University in addition to his current successes at Hebron Middle, where his team regularly places in the top five at the state tournament. He has helped found speech/debate teams not only at Hebron but also at Bullitt County Schools’ high schools North Bullitt, Bullitt Central, and Bullitt East. Zorn also is the past President and current Tabulations Director for the Wilson Wyatt Debate League, a free debate league founded and endowed by his grandfather, Wilson Wyatt, a former Mayor of Louisville and Kentucky Lieutenant Governor.
