Bullitt County, KY — Bullitt County Public Schools (BCPS) is excited to announce significant progress in its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. In partnership with Trane Technologies, BCPS implemented two Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs) in 2008 and 2018, allowing the district to make substantial improvements in lighting, HVAC, and building automation systems. These efforts have led to utility cost savings of over $10.9 million, enhancing both the learning environment and long-term sustainability.
These ESPCs have been instrumental in helping BCPS address the challenges of rising utility costs and outdated building equipment. By upgrading to high-efficiency lighting, advanced HVAC systems, and enhanced data tracking through building automation systems, BCPS has created healthier, more efficient spaces for students and staff.
BCPS Superintendent Jesse Bacon praised the initiative, stating, “We are committed to providing safe, sustainable environments that support student learning and well-being. Through our partnership with Trane, we’ve been able to make essential upgrades that benefit not only our district but also set a positive example for other schools in Kentucky.”
BCPS’s dedication to sustainability has been recognized on a national level. The district earned the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year award in 2016 and 2019, and in 2019, it was honored as a Better Buildings Challenge Goal Achiever by the U.S. Department of Energy—achieving its energy reduction goals eight years ahead of schedule. Recently, BCPS set an ambitious new goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2027, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier environment for students and the community.
The ESPC approach has allowed BCPS to fund these improvements without impacting the district’s debt capacity, as the energy savings generated by the upgrades covered the cost of implementation. This self-sustaining model has empowered BCPS to be proactive, avoiding future energy costs and setting the stage for ongoing sustainability.
BCPS is proud to lead the way in energy efficiency and sustainability, creating a lasting positive impact on Kentucky’s education system.
