Bullitt County Public Schools (BCPS) is proud to celebrate Luna Asbell, a distinguished scholar and current student at The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science, for being named a National Merit Finalist. This prestigious recognition places Luna among the nation’s top academic achievers and highlights their dedication to excellence in education.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a highly competitive academic competition that begins with more than 1.5 million entrants each year. Students qualify based on their PSAT/NMSQT scores, and only about 1% of high school seniors advance to the finalist stage, demonstrating outstanding academic performance, leadership, and a commitment to learning.

Luna’s journey to this achievement began at Riverview Opportunity Center before transitioning to The Gatton Academy, one of the nation’s top-ranked residential programs for high-achieving high school students in STEM fields. Their selection as a National Merit Finalist is a testament to their perseverance, innovative problem-solving, and self-directed learning—qualities emphasized in the BCPS Graduate Profile.

Dr. Lynette Breedlove, Director of The Gatton Academy, highlighted the importance of strong educational foundations in Luna’s success: "Luna’s opportunities and access to strong teachers in Bullitt County Public Schools were certainly important factors in their achievement. This is an honor of which both of our organizations can be proud."

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon praised Luna’s accomplishment, stating: "We are incredibly proud of Luna’s hard work and dedication. Their recognition as a National Merit Finalist is not only a reflection of their academic excellence but also of the supportive learning environment fostered at BCPS. Luna truly exemplifies what it means to be a Mastery Learner and a Self-Directed Navigator."

Dominic McCammish, Principal of BCPS’ Specialized Programs, also commended Luna’s achievement: "This honor is well deserved, and Luna’s success underscores the power of perseverance and passion for learning. We look forward to seeing the incredible impact they will continue to make."

As Luna continues their educational journey, BCPS remains committed to inspiring and equipping students to succeed in life by fostering a future-focused approach to education. Luna’s achievement serves as an inspiration to all BCPS students, reinforcing the district’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
