LEBANON JUNCTION, KY – On Friday, March 14, Lebanon Junction Elementary School’s fifth-grade students transported their families, teachers, and guests through time during a Historical Tea Party, an innovative learning experience that challenged students to embody historical individuals.
Traditionally, Lebanon Junction’s fifth graders have participated in a Living Wax Museum, where they portray well-known historical figures. This year, however, teachers took the project to a deeper level by encouraging students to research and represent “hidden figures”—influential individuals from history who may not be widely recognized.
The event featured students seated at tables representing various time periods. Throughout the tea party, students engaged in lively discussions, staying in character as they shared their personal histories, asked questions of one another, and navigated time-period differences. The result was a dynamic, cross-era conversation that sparked both curiosity and critical thinking.
"It was incredible to see students so immersed in history," said one of the fifth-grade teachers. "They didn’t just recite facts—they became their historical figures, questioning, debating, and making meaningful connections across time."
This innovative approach fostered critical thinking and historical empathy. Families and community members in attendance were captivated by the students’ depth of knowledge and engagement in historical inquiry. The event not only showcased the students’ research and preparation but also aligned with key competencies in the BCPS Graduate Profile, including effective communication, productive collaboration, and innovative problem-solving.
By stepping into the shoes of these hidden figures and engaging in thoughtful dialogue, students embraced differences, developed empathy, and strengthened their ability to think critically—important skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Lebanon Junction Elementary is proud of its students and staff for their hard work and dedication in bringing history to life in such an authentic and meaningful way.
