BCPS High Schools Drive Home Life-Saving Lessons with Powerful Student Events
“Killer Decisions” and “Day of Shattered Dreams” Promote Safe Choices Behind the Wheel
Recently, Bullitt East and North Bullitt High Schools hosted impactful learning experiences designed to help students understand the life-altering consequences of impaired and distracted driving.
In March, Bullitt East High School, students participated in Killer Decisions, a simulation-based event that challenged them to reflect on the real-world outcomes of risky behaviors behind the wheel. The day featured interactive sessions, guest speakers, and a mock wreck scenario that vividly illustrated the potential costs of unsafe choices. Through the power of firsthand learning, students were reminded that their decisions matter, both on the road and beyond.
Just a few weeks later, North Bullitt High School brought similar life-saving messages to its students through Day of Shattered Dreams. The day-long event included five powerful rotations: obstacle courses with local police, a presentation from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, stories from individuals in recovery, a firsthand account of the Carrollton Bus Crash, and guidance from officers on DUI awareness and traffic stops. The culminating moments (a simulated fatal wreck and mock funeral) left a lasting impression on seniors about the sobering reality of unsafe driving.
These events are a testament to the strong partnerships between BCPS schools, local law enforcement, first responders, and community organizations. Most importantly, they represent our commitment to helping students grow into Community Contributors and Self-Directed Navigators, two key components of the BCPS Graduate Profile.
We are proud of the efforts made by our schools, staff, and volunteers to put student safety at the forefront. By creating these immersive and emotional learning moments, BCPS continues to move forward with a Future Focused, Service Before Self approach.
